These paintings begin with a person, but they are not about likeness alone.
I am interested in what sits just beneath the surface—what is carried, what is remembered, what is held quietly in the expression or posture of a moment. A portrait, at its best, is not a record of how someone looks, but a reflection of how they are present in the world.
The work develops through observation, reference, and conversation. Light, atmosphere, and distance play a role in how the image resolves, often becoming clearer as the viewer steps back, much the way understanding itself can take shape over time.
I take on a limited number of portrait commissions. Each is approached as a painting first, not a product, and is developed with the same care and attention as the rest of my work.
For those interested in discussing a commission, I welcome you to reach out.
